Job Description
Westchester Public Library is seeking a systemwide Facilities Manager to oversee maintenance and security of all four Library locations. Candidates must demonstrate dedicated stewardship of public funds, and have the experience and ability to lead and serve in a consistently professional manner.
The Facilities Manager is responsible to the Executive Director for the cleanliness, upkeep, repair, and remodeling of WPL’s grounds and facilities. Responsibilities include:
- Serving as the primary point of contact for contractors and vendors who provide facilities maintenance services to the Library, and inspectors.
- Interviewing, training, assisting, and supervising departmental staff in providing maintenance and cleaning services, to include performing necessary tasks when assistance is not available.
- Investigating, recommending, designing, and implementing improvements to increase efficiency or security as needed.
- Reviewing, recommending, hiring, and supervising contractual services for such items as water treatment, lawn care, snow removal, security systems, elevator maintenance, etc.
- Operating and repairing HVAC equipment and maintenance systems, and scheduling and supervising specialized HVAC technicians when necessary.
- Reading and interpreting blueprints, specifications, and operating instructions
- Assisting with the maintenance, repair, and installation of electrical and automated systems.
- Establishing inventory levels and purchasing all repair, maintenance, and cleaning supplies, as well as some programming supplies as needed.
- Transporting mail and materials between library departments and facilities.
- Maintaining and setting up meeting rooms, and providing assistance to patrons utilizing meeting rooms as needed.
- Assisting with Friends of the Library Book Sales and other library programs, including facilitation of WPL’s outdoor film and concert series.
- Attending and participating in staff meetings and continuing education opportunities.
- Serving on library committees as assigned, and providing systemwide staff training on various facilities-related topics.
- Building positive, openly communicative, and professional relationships with fellow managerial staff, and within all library departments.
- Using judgement and initiative to coordinate maintenance projects and establish safety protocols in compliance with OSHA standards.
- Performing written performance evaluations of all direct reports on an annual basis.
- Completing all other tasks as assigned by the Executive Director, in accordance with the needs of the Library.
- Must understand, respect, and actively support organizational hierarchy.

- Must accept and manage change, maintaining composure and professionalism in any situation.
- Must consistently demonstrate strong communication skills (verbal and written) and use proper grammar.
- Must be organized, flexible, and able to multitask.
- Must have proficiency with computers, including the Internet, Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and communication technologies such as email.
- Must have integrity, be open to ideas, and inclusive of diversity. A sense of humor is a plus!
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university is preferred. Some technical school or relevant college coursework is required.
- Broad knowledge of facilities management, occupational hazards, and building security, with a good safety record
- 5 years hands-on experience with building and equipment maintenance, with at least 3 years in a supervisory capacity.
- Willingness/ability to work occasional evening or weekend shifts, and special events.
- Reliable personal transportation and a valid driver’s license.

Salary from $59,000 depending on qualifications, with an excellent benefits package:
- WPL provides access to health insurance coverage for full-time, eligible employees, and makes a generous annual contribution into covered employees’ individual Health Savings Accounts.
- WPL pays both the employee and employer portions to make the maximum allowable contribution into the Indiana Public Employee Retirement Fund for full-time eligible employees.
- WPL pays both the employee and employer portions for life insurance coverage for full time eligible employees.
- Full-time professional employees accrue 20 vacation days annually; accrue sick leave; and are compensated for 12 holidays annually.
- WPL also offers both full- and part-time employees the option to participate in Hoosier S.T.A.R.T. retirement savings plans for employees of the State of Indiana.
Westchester Public Library is a township library system operating two branches, a service center/event space, and the Westchester Township History Museum; serving Chesterton, Porter, Burns Harbor, and Dune Acres; located four miles from Indiana Dunes National Park and forty-six miles from Chicago.
