Job Description

Gearbox Software is looking for a Senior Environment Artist to help shape the worlds of our upcoming projects. In this role, you’ll be responsible for building immersive, visually striking environments that balance artistic vision with gameplay needs. From architecture and terrain to props and foliage, you’ll bring 2D concepts to life in 3D while ensuring assets are optimized across platforms. This position is ideal for a creative problem-solver with a deep understanding of environment pipelines, a strong eye for composition and design, and a passion for crafting game worlds that inspire players. As a senior team member, you’ll also mentor junior artists, contribute to documentation and workflows, and collaborate closely with art, design, and technical teams to push the boundaries of what’s possible in real-time rendering.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create high-quality 3D environment assets, including architecture, props, terrain, and foliage, optimized for performance and visual fidelity.
  • Collaborate with Art Director and Concept Artists to translate 2D concepts into fully realized 3D environments.
  • Be able to extrapolate and expand on existing visual designs as is needed.
  • Collaborate with Level Designers and Tech Art Director to create environments that support gameplay mechanics, optimize assets for performance across multiple platforms while maintaining visual quality.
  • Mentor junior artists, providing feedback and guidance to elevate team output.
  • Is detailed oriented, skilled at creating relevant documentation, can assist others with naming and file organization.
  • Stay current with industry trends and techniques to push the boundaries of environment art.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience as an Environment Artist in the video game industry, with at least one shipped AAA title.
  • Proficiency in industry-standard tools such as 3ds Max, Blender, ZBrush, Substance Painter/Designer, and Unreal Engine (or equivalent).
  • Strong understanding of environment art pipelines, including modeling, texturing, lighting, and optimization.
  • Exceptional artistic skills with a keen eye for composition, color, lighting, and detail.
  • Experience with PBR workflows and creating assets for real-time rendering.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-disciplinary teams in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a passion for creating immersive game worlds.
  • Bonus: Experience with procedural generation tools (e.g., Houdini) or shader creation.
  • Comfortable providing feedback as is needed for external parties

Preferred Skills

  • Build and light environments using Unreal Engine to ensure cohesive aesthetics and mood.
  • Experience with Unreal Engine 5.6 and Nanite, SpeedTree, PCG, Houdini and UGC
  • Comfortable working with stylized or semi-realistic game worlds.
  • Knowledge of level design principles and how environments impact gameplay.
  • Experience with version control systems (e.g., Perforce, Git).
  • Passion for gaming and a deep understanding of Gearbox’s titles and fanbase.
